JottingsOne of the most beautiful parts of the Christmas Eve liturgy is the singing of the Martyrology which situates the birth of Christ in time and place. When we reach the words "All the earth being at peace . . ." the music becomes more and more intense, while finally the Incarnation is announced on a falling cadence. When God has uttered his Word, there is no need for further speech, but as today's podcast reminds us, the emphasis at Christmas is not on God's humility but our great dignity.
